Dad’s Chunky Apple Sauce

Sweet cinnamon spiced apple sauce– can be served fresh, frozen or canned.

Dad’s Chunky Apple Sauce

Yield: about 6 cups   Prep: 5 minutes   Cook: 15 minutes

Ingredients

  • 8 large Macintosh apples- peeled, cored and sliced thick
  • ½ cup water
  • 2 lemon slices
  • ½ cup sugar
  • ¼ tsp cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp nutmeg

Combine apples, water, and lemon slices in a large sauce pan. Simmer uncovered for 10 minutes until apples are soft and broken up. Stir often as it should be thick and may burn. Remove lemon slices. Add in sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Cook for 2 more minutes. Serve warm or cold.


Tips for cooking: Add the sugar in a bit at a time, to your own taste. You can even leave the sugar out of this if you prefer.

Good for 1 week in the fridge.

To Freeze: Add a bit extra spices. Allow the apples sauce to cool completely. Place in freezer safe containers with ½ inch head room. Good for 1 year.

To Can: Put applesauce into sterilized jars leaning ½ inch head room. Seal the jars and process in the water bath for 10 minutes. Remove and cool. Good for 1 year.
